Midway and Coastal Liberty County
Midway and Coastal Liberty County
Coastal Liberty County, Georgia is an area rich with heritage, history and recreation for all ages. Quick and easy access to the saltwater rivers and tributaries of the Atlantic Ocean as well as a close proximity to Hinesville, Richmond Hill, Savannah and Brunswick make the eastern end of the county an ideal place to call home.
Originally inhabited by the Creek Indians and home to Fort Morris, Liberty County is named for it's role in America's struggle for independence. The first flag of independence to be raised in Georgia was in Liberty County when it was still part of Saint John's Parrish. Fort Morris, located at Sunbury, was originally a Guale indian village and was built in 1776 to protect Georgia's middle coast and the important seaport of Sunbury from attacks by the British. On November 25th, 1778 the British forces demanded the immediate surrender of the fort. Colonel John McIntosh sent a defiant reply: "Come and take it!". Shortly thereafter the British returned and took the fort after a short but heavy bombardment. During the next hundred years the fort would be modified and used several times by both American Revolutionary and British forces.
Today, Sunbury is home to the exclusive residential communities of The Pointe and Merchant's Wharf as well as The Shrimp Docks restaurant and expansive views of the Medway River and coastal georgia marshlands. Sunbury is one of four major residential areas east of Interstate 95. Moving further east, developments such as Colonel's Island, Yellow Bluff and Bluff Creek Plantation become more and more coastal in nature and centered around the Medway and North Newports Rivers. Both bodies extend a short way eastward leading to Saint Catherine's Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.
Saint Catherine's Island is located just South of Yellow Bluff and is one of Georgia's last untouched barrier islands. The island is home to the lost Mission Santa Catalina de Guale, Georgia's oldest known church. The beaches of Saint Catherine's Island are pristine and an assortment of beautiful driftwood and coastal wildlife. The island is accessible only by boat and is restricted from public access without permission from Saint Catherine's Wildlife Federation, the organization that presently controls the island and operates an endangered species breeding program on location. The waters off of the shore of the island are reknowned for their productive fishing and the secluded beaches are quiet and void of beach-goers.
The Isle of Wight is located further inland, immediately to the west of Interstate 95. The area is strictly residential and is perfect for residents who crave both saltwater and freshwater access. The island is home to five small private freshwater lakes and a public boat landing accessing Jones Creek, yet another tributary of Saint Catherine's Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Other similar areas west of Interstate 95 include Lake Gale and Lake George.
Hampton Island is located to the South near the border of Liberty and McIntosh counties. This 2,300 acre waterfront retreat attracted a frenzy of media attention when the first two parcels of land made available for sale were purchased by Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez in what is rumored to be the highest property purchase on the East coast within recent times. The island was once a thriving rice plantation and served as a confederate outpost during the civil war. Hampton Island Preservation, LLC controls the island and is planning a highly exclusive, low density, undeveloped community with amenities such as an eleven passenger sea plane to ferry the residents from their docks to neighboring islands, an equestrian center with twenty miles of riding trails, a fifty-three acre lake with a grist mill and fishing camp and a chapel overlooking the marsh.
The cities of Midway and Riceboro provide a small town environment and an economic base for the eastern portion of the county. The Midway industrial park is home to industrial sites such as Mainship which builds luxury class yachts, Hugo Boss' newest facility and several other companies. The in-progress Liberty County Coastal Megapark planned by the Liberty County Economic Development Authority is a five thousand acre regional industrial park that is expected to bring a huge economic impact to Liberty and surrounding counties. The megapark is anticipated to be "a mecca for industry, mainly exports and intermodal transportation for highways, ships and rail." (U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston) capitalizing on its proximity to Georgia Ports Authority facilities in Savannah and Brunswick.
