The City of Hinesville, incorporated by the Georgia General Assembly on July 14, 1916, is home to Fort Stewart and the 3rd Infantry Division Mechanized of the U.S. Army. The proximity of the military base and the mutual cooperation between both the city and the base afford a diverse citizenship both military and civilian. Fort Stewart, named to the dedication of General Daniel Stewart, is an incredible asset to both the immediate community and the strength of the U.S. Armed Forces. As quoted on the Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield website: Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield are the home of the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), and combine to be the Army's Premier Power Projection Platform on the Atlantic Coast. It is the largest, most effective and efficient armor training base east of the Mississippi, covering 280,000 acres including parts of Liberty, Long, Tattnall, Evans and Bryan counties in southeast Georgia. Fort Stewart provides 28 freshwater lakes and ponds and deer, turkey and dove hunting for active duty military, military dependents and retired military. In addition, the recently constructed AAFES center offers on-post shopping and dining. The Fort Stewart Museum is open to the general public and showcases the history of the division and installation.
